3

A real bargain by European continent standards

Bulgaria is unbelievably beautiful and charming and ridiculously affordable. Bulgaria is a perfect combination of an alluring seaside and beautiful mountains in the countryside. It is a full member of the European Union. Sofia, the capital, tends to have the priciest living costs, but they are still inexpensive compared to Western European standards. Bulgaria is an excellent choice for education.

SOFIA CITY

Surrounded by sprawling parkland, Sofia, the capital and largest city of the Republic of Bulgaria, lies at the foot of popular ski mountain, Vitosha. With a history that stretches over seven millennia, ruin-rich Sofia is one of Europe's oldest cities. Wide, cobblestone boulevards, charming boutiques and truly electrifying nightlife star in this city of 1.3 million. Trolleys, trams and buses traverse the dynamic city.

SOFIA

Sofia is lucky enough to have a tall mountain just a 30-minute drive from the city center. Vitosha Mountain and its snowy Cherni Vrah Peak are visible from almost all corners of the city, inviting hikers to see the capital from above.

Sofia – history and culture

Most of the biggest and the best museums and galleries that will help you understand Bulgaria’s past and present are in Sofia. Start with the National History Museum, visit the Sofia History Museum, and spend an hour or two at the National Art Gallery and the Museum of Socialist Art. Discover Bulgaria’s diverse layers of history, mixing up Roman ruins and Soviet architecture, as well as Ottoman and Byzantine religious and cultural influences.

Learn from Bulgaria: Religious tolerance into a societal norm

Sofia is the only city in Europe that has places of worship of four different major religions located so close to each other. Right in the city center, you can visit an Orthodox church (Saint Nedelya), a mosque (Banya Bashi), a Catholic cathedral (Saint Joseph) and a synagogue (Sofia Synagogue). These buildings form a square called the Square of Religious Tolerance.

Only one word – food!

Bulgarian contemporary cuisine is a mix of hearty Balkan food with a pinch of freshness typical of Mediterranean dishes. You will find some dishes similar to other Balkan countries. For example, tarator is similar to the Greek tzatziki, while banitsa is a baked pastry with Bulgarian feta cheese (sirene) and eggs found all over the region. Sofia is perfect for foodies with its variety of food venues. You can spend many days eating in Sofia.
