APPLICATION PROCEDURE

The admission requirements for international citizens depend on the category of the students and the specialties they choose. The application procedure differs in terms and conditions and the tuition fees are different for Bulgarians / EU citizens and the citizens of non-EU member countries.

Application procedure

Bulgarians / EU citizens – depending on the specialty they choose, they enter a contest by taking entrance examinations or are ranked based on of their results/grades received as a result of the national high-school leaving exams.

Bulgarian nationals permanently living abroad compete for the Bulgarian state universities. They are ranked based on the results of the entrance exams in Bulgarian language and literature and Bulgarian history, organized by the Ministry of education and science of the Republic of Bulgaria every year.

Applicants from non-EU member countries (tuition-fee paying students) apply by submitting their documents only. Applications are ranked provided that the grade relevant to the major applied for is not lower than 62% of the maximum grade according to the grading system in the country in which the applicant has completed his/her secondary education (i.e. is equivalent to a grade of Good).

Visa & Access to higher education institutions


All foreigners have a right to study in higher education institutions of the Republic of Bulgaria, if they hold a document of completed secondary education of the country where the secondary education has been acquired, or a document of higher education or higher education degree.

Candidatesfor acquiring a degree in Bulgaria must submit their documents on paper.
The minimum average success rate of the subjects of the completed higher education document required for a given program may not be less than 62 percent of the maximum value of the assessment system in the country in which the secondary education was acquired.

Higher education institutions send to the Ministry of education and science all required documents of the candidates approved by them in order of the implementation of the procedure for issuing long-stay visas - visa “D”, not later than from 1st October for the first semester and no later than 1st February for the second semester of the year of application.

A long-stay visa with a validity term of up to one year and a right to stay up to 360 days may be issued to foreigners who perform science research or are students under tuition programmes for up to one year, post-graduate or trainee students.
The long-stay visa entitles the holder to multiple entries in the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria within its validity term.

A document, issued by competent authorities, which testifies to the right of the applicant to further his/her education at a university level in the country where they have completed their secondary school education

A Transcript of Records

A Medical Certificate of Health issued within a month before the application date and verified by the competent authorities in the country from which the applicant submits his/her file

Four passport-size photographs

Language certificate

The diploma, the medical certificate and all documents issued by bodies abroad should be translated into Bulgarian and certified in accordance with the provisions of the international agreements between the Republic of Bulgaria and the country where the documents have been issued. In cases when such provisions are not available, the general order for translation and legalization procedures, and procedures for certification of documents should be considered.

Study visa type D

Type D study visa is not required for:

Study in Bulgaria

citizens of the European Union and the European Economic Area

2

foreign nationals – permanent residents of the Republic of Bulgaria who have applied and have been accepted under the conditions and following the regulations pertaining to Bulgarian citizens

3

applicants with dual citizenship, one of which is Bulgarian

4

applicants for part-time studies and distance learning

Applicants who need type D visa the following:

1

a certificate issued by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Bulgaria stating that the applicant has been accepted to study at a university in Bulgaria

The University’s bank account for the candidate to deposit the tuition fee per semester for their studies
